Old Era V/s New Era
"A world together, a world apart", is a great quote to explain how the early modern era had changed especially for the better. The time of early modern era was a very busy time for renewal, growth, and expansion.
Life was vastly different for people in ancient times and we must understand our ancestors, appreciate their lives, and should learn from them. In a time without cell phones, computers, telephones, automobiles, refrigerators, and all the beeps, buzzes, and noises of modern life.
"If there is any period one would desire to be born in, is not the age of Revolution, when the old and the new stand side by side...When the glories of the old can be compensated by the rich possibilities of the new era. This time... is a very good one" ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
A lot has taken place during the past years. It goes without saying that people's standard of living has been greatly elevated, with urbanization developing at a fast pace. Accordingly, people's lifestyles and preferences have changed.
In antiquity, the man was governed by the realities of nature in a way that few people living today can even imagine. Sundials, water clocks, and other devices were used to tell the time in the ancient world, but mechanical clocks were not invented until the early Renaissance. In ancient times artificial light, usually candles or lamps lit with olive oil, was expensive. Most people had little. When the sun went down, they went to bed. Simultaneously, in modern times, artificial light is cheap and work is less often hard than physical labor. Instead of being awake 12-14 hours per day like the ancients were, we are awake 16-18 hours per day, most of it filled with activity and sensation. The attitude of people in the past would have been more peaceful since they did not have any complex economic, social or political problems. Thus this attitude and feelings were much simple than the present day. On the contrary, people in the present are more educated, open, and free to express their opinions.
